The year 2020 will mark three major demographic milestones
that will shape social and economic trends throughout the country:
Baby Boomers Over 60: Long the primary force in
defining American culture, the last of the Boomers will begin turning 60. Unlike
previous generations, Boomers are expected to continue working, start second
careers and indulge themselves in leisure activities. The number of people in
the over 60 age group will double to 70 million by 2020.
X Generation in Their Prime: Known as the “Lost Generation” or defined as "Urban Tribes" the X’ers
will enter senior positions in business, elected offices in their
communities and be involved in raising families. Though fewer
in numbers than other generations, they sparked the interest in
movement back to
downtown environments. They also led the movement for changes in work space, later marriage, group
activities. This is the "Friends" generation.
Millennials Come of Age: Born from 1980 on as children of the Baby Boomers and
the early X’ers this generation is often known as the “protected”
generation, i.e. Baby on Board, Just Say No, etc. Raised during a time
of no war, economic prosperity and access to unprecedented amounts of
information through technology this generation will be a major social
and economic force, and are likely to be the most traditional and
conservative in generations. |
