Cities are melting pots for diversity of race, ethnicity,
age, income and lifestyle. Hospitality zones capture a
distinct mix of cultures through a variety of food and
entertainment choices. By nurturing independent
businesses, we sustain the cultural diversity that makes
urban life unique.
As cities gentrify, barriers emerge for businesses to adapt
to and be included in the plans and processes of
redevelopment. This is especially true for African
American neighborhoods, once political and economic centers,
now recovering from decades of neglect and isolation.
Chicago's Bronzeville is a great example and will be
featured in this panel and on a neighborhood tour.
Representatives from other cities, both on the panel and in
the audience will have an opportunity to exchange
opportunities and challenges. |
