NIGHTLIFE SETTINGS are high-intensity environments with complex dynamics and risk factors including aggression, active shooters, sexual assault, theft, crowds, vandalism, underage drinking and driving.

VENUE SAFETY is an organized alliance of nightlife businesses to formalize practices and improve communication with regulatory and enforcement agencies. A coordinated system with training, newsletters, forums and award celebrations build commitment.

PUBLIC SAFETY is an interagency collaborative to collect and organize data, identify at risk venues and patron behavior and coordinated early assistance for improved compliance.

QUESTIONS TO EVALUATE YOUR CITY'S PUBLIC AND VENUE SAFETY

  • Is your police budget strained from overtime to manage crowds?
  • Is there a dedicated officer team with specialized training?
  • Do public safety compliance agencies share data/coordinate interventions? How often do they meet?
  • Is there an active hospitality association providing training? Are there night private security services?
  • How is technology used by your venues? ID Scanners? Cameras?
  • Do licensing systems require measurable performance indicators?
  • Is there a central record of business violations and calls for service?
  • If there is a college, how engaged are the security services with the city?

CRITICAL STAKEHOLDERS FOR EFFECTIVE NIGHTTIME SAFETY

Assuring nighttime safety requires systems to prevent crime and address disorder in public space and in private venues through a continuum of partnerships.  Police, fire, private security, venue management, staff and district ambassadors all have a role to create a welcome and safe social environment for residents and visitors.
